Would a track drag be a good idea?
This is all just my opinion and I just wanted to throw this out there for discussion since this is after all a club. Lately I have heard from a few out of town and club guys that the track is extremely rough and hard to actually "race". I have noticed the same thing with1/10 buggy. After all we have had nearly 8 inches of rain. I was wondering if someone out there has any way of either making a drag or if you think it would be a good idea to buy a top of the line drag. We have the means of actually dragging the track since we have the tractor and I have looked into a few options. The most expensive one we would need would cost around $300.00 from what I have seen. Just wondering what everyone else thinks............

A track drag of some sort would be a good idea, but that one is not nearly agressive enough(unless the track has gotten a lot softer this summer). If you look on the page John posted you will see a "chain harrow" it is much more agressive than that mat. I brought ours up there 2 years ago and even on the most agressive setting with extra weight it barely scratched the surface let alone did any leveling. IMO, as somebody who has broken a few acres of ground; find an old single gang disc to break up the surface and then use a chain harrow. Just remember if you do this it will cut up whatever you drag it across, that includes obstacles you built. Also, keep in mind that if you don't want to break something up you have to be able to go around said object or lift your implement.

I'm more a fan of something cheaper and ghetto rigged. I would take a 6' length of railroad tie and sink a bunch of heavy duty screws into one side of it. Then put some eyelets on each side, one for towing, and one on the back side to chain another tie to it that is smooth on the bottom. You already have rail ties, buy some eyelets, screws, and chain and you have a great drag for $30-40 tops.

Menor says try dragging Robert around the track and see what that does?

My idea is to drag everyone that don't show up to help behind the tractor and use that for a drag! Track will be fine after tonight the bobcat will be dragging it. +1 on Troys idea we have a make shift one like that put together me and Josh Ford used it till it broke. It worked well nut nut great the secret to dragging it is the track has to be damp to drag it otherwise the dirt is like concrete.

Robert, how are you gonna drag people that don't show up around the track if they don't show up?

So if we really want to do this I like Gubbs idea. We could drag rail road ties that are chained together. We Have tons of 3/16 and 1/4 grade 80 steel at work that will never get used. I could program and cut blades with the plasm that we could bolt to the ties to drag around.. just a suggestion.

Problem is gettign enough weight to actually dig into track and having something powerful enough to pull it, usually in order to be powerful enough to pull the amount of weight needed will be something that cannot make the corners. Believe me we tried all kinds of things at TCHR. Best thing was some steel pallets that we modified one side of so it had metal sticking down into track and top was weighted with cement block of someone sitting on it, be eventually the metal spikes pritruding would break off..

so have the diy guys gotten this done yet? Mr Bill and Robert... that would be you since Gubbs is in Chicago.
If the decision is to buy one and the club doesn't have the money which I don't think is the case I would gladly put an extra 20 towards it and think others would too...
It's obvious in both Onroad and Offroad help is a problem either people are busy or lazy... In the end if we want to race it doesn't matter the reason people don't help but we should do what we can to make it easier on the people who do.
I give witta crap just as much as the next person for leaving the second he's done racing but if I had to work at 3am I wouldn't even show up to race. I was gone for 2 months for work... I get back in town get engaged and have a lot of other stuff going on whether or not people think its a good excuse doesn't matter I don't think I've had time to help and haven't shown up to help. I think as a club we should address the issue of making things easier on the people who can and do help (Bullet and Gary) instead of whining about the people who don't show up.

I dont think a track drag would be a very good idea
Like Jeff posted, I dont see it working too well on our track, unless we had a strait up oval, then a drag would work great. I for see the track drag a bust lame
